Cap and gown

Well, Laura and I are one step closer to graduation. We went to the union the other day to purchase our cap, gown, and tassel. Everyone wears a green cap and gown at MSU. I get to look like a leprechaun! Your tassel color is based on your college. I get ugly old orange, my least favorite color. If I would've known, I wouldn't have gone into engineering. Let's see... Online, it says dentistry gets a lilac tassel. That would have been prettier. Ooo! Peacock blue for public administration. Law gets purple! Maybe I'll go to law school just so I can have a pretty tassel.
Anyway, it's just three weeks away, now. Then summer vacation! I've been getting a little taste of summer this weekend. The weather's been gorgeous. I couldn't have asked for a nicer day today. My friend's wedding shower was today. Since it was so warm, I wore a dress. We all went to this Japanese restaurant; there were about twelve ladies total. We ate sushi, watched Ren open gifts, and played typical bridal shower games, including the one where you dress people in toilet paper dresses. We divided into teams and had five minutes to dress one member of each team in a dress made of toilet paper. I got to be one of the models. I think it was a combination of the beautiful design of the toilet paper wrapped around me and my runway walk that caused Ren to choose my team as the winners. Woohoo!

Toilet paper dresses? There may have been twelve people present, but calling yourselves ladies may be a stretch.

if you go to egypt this summer, don't go out in public wrapped in toilet paper. they'll think you're a mummy (and nobody will want to be your friend).

I got a blister because I went to church this morning. I guess that's what I get for going to worship God and stuff. I debated not going this morning just because I have an exam tomorrow which I'm kinda stressed about (philosophy). But I knew that's a stupid reason to skip church. Mother's Day

Another Mother's Day. I keep forgetting I'm one of the mothers being celebrated today. I always just thing about my own mom, who's great by the way. It's my third year with my little boy; you'd think I'd be used to it by now. I didn't repeatedly remind my husband Mark that the day was coming or drop hints of great gift ideas. (I do have the perfect thing in mind.) I was hoping he'd remember the date and plan enough ahead to do something sweet--order flowers, buy a card, give me some little personalized piece of jewelry, whatever. But Mother's Day began like any other. No breakfast in bed. I didn't find flowers waiting for me on the breakfast table. It was Sunday, so there was church. Since we're in quarantine, we just have to tune in online at 11:00. I always wait for Mark to wake up so he can watch our son Greg while I shower and get dressed. St. Lucia

This past Saturday, one of my friends, Rachel, invited me to her home church for their annual St. Lucy's Day celebration. Her church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination , so it has a rich Swedish heritage, and I guess Saint Lucia celebrations are a big tradition there. If you ever read those American Girl books about Kirsten, this should sound a little familiar. Saint Lucia was an Italian saint who suffered a martyr's death when she brought food and supplies to Christians hiding in the catacombs while wearing a wreath with candles on her head to light the way and keep both hands free. I guess this Swedish breakfast thing is a pretty big deal at Rachel's church each year. A lot of people are involved in it. They serve three breakfasts throughout the course of the morning so they can accommodate all the people who want to participate.
